Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the High Park Zoo in Toronto in November 2017. I was attending school at a nearby university and went for a day in the park.

Time

This photo was taken in the middle of the afternoon on a warm but overcast day. The diffused light of an overcast afternoon made for great photo conditions.

Lighting

The lighting in the photo is all natural sunlight. The image was taken on an overcast day with great diffused light, which helped capture details like the smallest feathers while still creating a soft, diffused look.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D5100 with a 55-300mm Nikkor lens. No tripod or flash was used.

Inspiration

I stumbled across the High Park Zoo while walking around the rest of the park and the variety of animals inspired some interesting shots. I took photos of emus, capybara and other animals, but the way this goose simply tucked its nose into its feathers struck me and made me want to capture the moment.

Editing

I lightened the goose's eye ever so slightly in order to increase the contrast of the rest of the image without losing the colour of the eye.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D5100 with a 55-300mm Nikkor lens and a 35mm Nikkor lens as well as the kit lens as an emergency back-up. I have a battery grip on my camera and I carry my chargers at all times just in case. Other than that, I have small accessories like extra memory cards, a lens cloth, etc.

Feedback

With animals, be curious and be patient. It often takes animals time to adjust to the presence of humans and the longer you stick around (at a respectful distance), the more likely you are to get a more natural or interesting shot. Even animals that are considered common or boring like a pigeon or a goose can make for beautiful photography.
