Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the family's home in Texas. I attended the Art Institute of Austin, earned my BFA in photography

Time

This day we got a late start. Mom was breast feeding as the time and the baby was hungry. This image was taken around 5 pm after the little guy was happy.

Lighting

I wanted this image to express family happiness. That happiness of waking up and being together. I used a Profoto B1 without a modifier to bounce light off of the wall in front of the bed. The bounced lighting created the soft light that enhances the smiles of the mom and daughter. It also emphasizes the family's happiness of being together.

Equipment

This image was shot on a Canon 5D Mark III with a 24mm-70mm f/2.8 lens, Profoto B1 and Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478DR light meter to meter the strobe.

Inspiration

Mom expressed how happy she felt to have her husband home after a long deployment. I wanted to create a family moment that reflected the family's joy of being together before the day get's busy.

Editing

I try to get as much as possible right in camera. In Light Room, I increased the contrast and clarity. Next I sharpened the image in Light Room. Finally, I increased the sharpness in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I like to be prepared for anything that may come up. Working with families can bring many different surprises. I don't usually get the opportunity to visit peoples home before a session, therefore I need to be prepared. I keep three lenses in my bag; 50mm f/1.4; 24mm-70mm f/2.8 and 16mm-35mm f/2.8 along with my Canon 5D Mark III. Additional lighting is also a must. I carry two Profoto A1's and one Profoto B1 and one light stand. In addition to my camera, lenses and lighting I also carry my SEKONIC LITEMASTER PRO L-478DR light meter. It saves time getting the desired exposure when using speed lights and strobes. This way I don't have to take a shot and check the back of my camera several times to determine my lighting.

Feedback

For anyone doing family life style with small children, my advice is, be patient and keep it fun! If the family is not relaxed and having fun it will reflect in their photos. Also, don't forget to give directions to the family but know when to step back and let it flow.
