Location
I made this mother/daughter image in the studio I have in my home, in Katy, Texas.Time
It was an evening shoot, as are most of my sessions, because I only get to work at this in my off time from another job.Lighting
I used a simple two light setup for a dramatic look focusing attention only on the pair and the close relation between her and her daughter.Equipment
I used a Canon7D, handheld, with a Canon primary lens. The depth of field was fairly shallow and the wardrobe was dark, again to concentrate on their expressions and closeness, using negative space.Inspiration
The mother was the daughter-in-law of a friend, and this was her first baby. It was a few days after coming home from the hospital and we wanted to preserve this very special time of theres.Editing
The mother was naturally beautiful so there was just a little skin processing to do and then a few steps in Photoshop to raise the contrast for the final image. In my camera bag
I tend to travel light when traveling or working on location. I like Canon bodies and lenses, and when needed, their great flashes. For this portrait, I took advantage of the Photogenic studio flashes I prefer in the studio for their power and reliability. I’ve been using them for years and never a single problem.Feedback
If you’re wanting to do good people portraits, I recommend start by knowing your equipment well so there are no interruptions from making minor adjustments. Try to create a comfortable environment to set your subject at ease, and do your work in a confident, relaxed way. Do everything you can to provide an experience your subject enjoys as much as possible. That experience is what will create value for your work and a great lifelong memory for your subject. The finer the experience you create the easier it will be for your subject to invest in your work. The images are the record of the experience they want to preserve.
