This photo of a common merganser was taken while I was out kayaking with some friends off Gambier island in Howe Sound, British Columbia.Time
When I took this photo, the sun had just set and we were preparing to head back to our camp, this was probably the last usable photo I took as the light started deteriorating quickly soon after.Lighting
The lighting wasn't fantastic at this time but these birds didn't frequent the area so I took the risk, shooting from a kayak a considerable distance away also added it's challenges as I had to shoot at a higher than desired shutter speed for the lighting conditions.Equipment
I was shooting on a Canon Eos 77D with a 150-600mm lensInspiration
No real inspiration here, I really like birds and couldn't recognize mergansers from afar so I took some photos to identify them.Editing
There wasn't much post-processing involved in this photo, I liked the natural look of it but I did try and remove some of the visual noise. In my camera bag
I usually carry a camera body, 2 or 3 lenses, spare batteries, spare sd cards, a tripod, a gorilla pod, and my DJI Mavic air. However, on this excursion, I only had a drybag with my camera and 2 lensesFeedback
Not really much to say, this photo was a bit of a fluke, just remember to step back from the viewfinder and live in the moment.
