Location
This photo was taken near the Great Swamp in Morris County, New Jersey. The Great Swamp is one of the places that defines New Jersey as the Garden State. There are absolutely beautiful views and interesting foliage to take in everywhere you turn.Time
On my way back from work, I would often take the long way home through the Great Swamp. I would park my car, walk and take it all in. This pictue was taken sometime between 5:30pm and 6:30 pm during the early fall.Lighting
Overcast skies can be a photographer's best friend. It makes for soft diffuse lighting. The clouds act as a modifier, similar to a giant softbox, spilling light evenly everywhere. It's always appreciated when I don't have to fight the sun with handheld modifiers.Equipment
This shot was taken in my very early days of photography. I shot this on a Nikon D5100 with a Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 lens all on a Manfrotto tripod. It's the first zoom lens I ever bought and I still use it to this day for the right situations.Inspiration
The overall scene had an aged and weathered feel to it. It was as if the shed was waiting for a long overdue visit in this vast empty space. The color also caught my eye... a spot of red against the green and brown backdrop. It just popped.Editing
The only post-processing I did in Lightroom was a little vignetting, contrast adjustments and desaturation to enhance the weathered/vintage look and feel.In my camera bag
Today, I carry around a Manfrotto tripod, a Nikon D500, a Nikon 12-24mm f4, Nikon 35 mm f1.8, a Nikon 28-70mm f2.8 and my beat up Tamron 18-200 f3.5-5.6 that I used to take this photo.Feedback
Park, walk and shoot.. often.. Perspective and lighting will constantly shift and change, even for places you've been before. Each time, you will see something new and different. Minimize distractions whenever possible so that you can feel what you see and shoot. It will also help you listen to the story that every image has to tell.
