In Shanghai the government is tearing down all of the old neighborhoods and alleyways (hutongs) replacing them with big apartment buildings. When they give notice of a neighborhood being torn down there are hold-outs who want more compensation from the government for their home. These are called 'nail' houses because they nail the eviction notice to the front door.
