Location
This photo was taken in Camrose, Alberta Canada. There is a small "lake" in the middle of the city and I frequent this location looking for photography subjects.Time
This photo was taken on April 21, 2019 at 6:44 A.M. I specifically got up early that day to photograph a sunrise. The walkway by the lake, the calm waters and the old time light posts worked perfectly.Lighting
Mother nature provided the ideal lighting for this shot. I was aiming to create a "starburst" and set the f-stop to f/22, using aperture priority mode. ISO was set at 200 and exposure time was 1/125 of a second.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, remote shutter release and a tripod.Inspiration
I try to find a wide variety of subjects to photograph and rather than falling back onto the usual landscape images, I decided on something different.... different for me. I find that shooting a variety of subjects, helps to prevent becoming bored. Mirror Lake is a place that I know well and provides different opportunities, such as wildlife, birds, reflections and other interesting subjects.Editing
I used Photoshop to make minor adjustments to exposure and perhaps color. I always shoot in RAW format and making small adjustments is usually required. I try not to do too much in post processing and try to get it right in the camera. In my camera bag
I'm a Canon guy. I currently use a EOS 5D Mark III which 95 percent of the time has my Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM attached to it. I also have my Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, my Canon EF85mm f/1.2L II USM handy as well. As I really enjoy trying to capture lightning photos as well, I always have my lightning trigger and tripod along with me as well.Feedback
Location, location, location. I find it useful to scout out potential locations to capture YOUR perfect shot. Knowing where you are going to go ahead of time allows you to time it right. The opportunity to get a sunrise, or sunset for that matter, is relatively brief. Don't let the weather deter you because a partly cloudy morning can add some pretty dramatic effects to a shot. Experiment with your camera settings as small changes can make a big difference.
