Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Corniche Road, in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is one of the few mosques in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where non-Muslims are allowed access.

Time

It was a Thursday, after work, I dragged a friend of mine to do an evening shoot. We arrived at the venue shortly before 8pm, while the evening prayer was underway.

Lighting

The light emanating from the mosque and the surrounding area was sufficient to capture the image I wanted. I didn't use flash. I did a long exposure instead to capture the moody light of the area.

Equipment

For this photo, I used a Nikon D7000, paired with a Nikkor 18-300, and a Manfrotto tripod to keep her steady. I also used a Nikon wire trigger to ensure that camera shake is avoided.

Inspiration

I was inspired by a friend who took the same photo just before sunrise. However, what I wanted to do what to make the mosque standout completely from the background and the foreground and make it look as if it were floating. There were some unforseen setbacks, like the tide, which could have made a tremendous difference.

Editing

Minimal post processing was done on this photo, just a few tweaks to enhance the colors, shadows and sharpness.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I carry a D750, a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, a Nikkor 85mm f/1.8., a Nikon remote trigger, and a Manfrotto tripod. I some cases, I also include my travel lens, Nikkor 18-300mm.

Feedback

Have a clear idea of how you would like your photo to look after the shoot. Scout the location ahead of time to determine travel time, people traffic, and where you will be positioned; select a date in advance; and determine the weather forecast, tide and moonrise (if any). All these information and steps are part of what's going to transform an ordinary view, to an extraordinary photo.
