Location
This photo was taken at sunset at Lassen Volcanic National Park. I am a geologist and was conducting fieldwork in the area. As a result, my free time to take photos was often limited to the last minutes of the day. This required planning ahead and understanding lighting at that time of day should an impromptu photo opportunity arise. I am very grateful my line of work affords me the chance to see and photograph often underrated and unique locations.Time
This photo was taken at sunset. I had to act fast before the light was lost on these wonderful lenticular clouds.Lighting
Since there was so much detail in the clouds, I wanted the sky and foreground to be equally interesting so I searched hard for the proper foreground interest and came across this large patch of flowers. Then it was just a matter of waiting for the right level of blue shadow to fall on the landscape acting as a transition between land and sky.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D3200 with a telephoto lens to help compress the midground and background.Inspiration
I had already seen one amazing sunset in the area. I was determined to capture the next. My goal was to have contrasting colors like the field of purple flowers and orange sky. I wanted there to be interest from front to back.Editing
As a bit of a novice to post-processing, my photos are light-handed with regards to editing, however I've found that to be enjoyable at times and pushed me to learn more about my equipment and capture all I can in camera, at the right time! This was a simple vertical focus stack with a few global color adjustments. In my camera bag
My equipment is limited, however my set of filters including a polarizer never leave the bag, and my 55-300 mm telephoto is by far the most used lens in the bag.Feedback
Planning! Working on location my time was limited so I was constantly on the lookout for potential photo stops for sunset should the lighting be right. I knew this spot would provide an excellent vantage point of the valley with the sun to my back should an interesting sky arrive.
