Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home garden. I am a self-taught photographer, so I take every opportunity close to home to discover and perfect my style.

Time

This photo was taken in the late afternoon when the sunlight was at the perfect angle to light up the blooms.

Lighting

Late afternoon sunlight can be great for capturing the detail in natural objects.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D5600 with a Nikkor 18-55mm lens. No other equipment was required.

Inspiration

The tulips around the house had just started to bloom, and I was walking around the garden admiring them. When I saw the way the light was hitting this trio I had to make sure to capture the moment.

Editing

The only post-processing was some cropping to draw the eye to the tulips without any distractions.

In my camera bag

I normally keep my D5600, Nikkor 18-55mm lens, and Nikkor 70-300mm lens. I keep a spare battery charger in the car too, just in case. Of course, my iPhone 8 serves as backup when I'm out with the kids and traveling light.

Feedback

Nature can be unpredictable, so scan the area for unwanted creatures and plants and clear those before taking your shot. For the best close-ups, don't be afraid to get down on the level of the object you are capturing. Taking shots from above can be great but eye-level shots help share a different perspective with others.
