While we were in Hawaii I was obsessed with chasing waterfalls. Good thing the kids were too. We hiked about an hour and a half to find this one (even though it should have been a 30min hike!)Time
Even though it took us so long to find the waterfall (because we are great explorerers and explore Everything!) we were still able to find the waterfall early morning when the light was still nice.Lighting
The light by this waterfall filters through the trees and reflects off the waterfall in such a magical way. It is like standing in a fairytale. The kids really intensify the mood with the wonder of it all glowing on their smiling faces.Equipment
This was shot on my Nikon Z7 with the perfect all around lens 24-70mm f/4. My Mefoto tripod made for an easy and quick set up.Inspiration
I knew I wanted to capture the mood and triumph of us reaching the waterfall. With my daughter full of pride and amazement at my side and my son smiling at me like everything was right in the world my chest was getting full and I knew this was the moment. Then my boy reached up to boop my nose ( thanks Trolls) I knew it was that this second was the one I wanted to keep forever.Editing
For this photo I simply added a little contrast and brought up the shadows. Not much needed beyond that.In my camera bag
I carry my Nikon Z7 with me everywhere. Literally everywhere. My 35mm 1.8 is my go to for portraits, details, and just wandering the streets. The bokeh is just right with this lens. I have a love of landscapes and being able to capture a scene in its entirety though so my new edition to the family is my Nikkor 14-30mm f4 wide angle lens. And I am quite obsessed. This camera is a subtle beast. I am always surprised by how much this lens takes in. And because I like balance (and flowers) I have the opposite end of the spectrum with my Nikon 105mm 2.8 VR Micro.Feedback
If your trying to shoot families or want to capture your own family then just keep clicking. Kids are quick and as moms we are usually chasing someone. So have a small camera that you can move easily and be prepared with your trigger finger.
