Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the deck of our rental house on a private island in Belize. The osprey had just completed a meal on a tree limb on our island.

Time

The time of this photo was early afternoon on a partly cloudy, windy day in Belize. The sun came out for this shot!

Lighting

The sunlight came from behind me and slightly illuminated the subject, especially his face.

Equipment

My camera was a Canon EOS 77D. The lens was a Canon 100-400 with internal stabilization. I did not use my tripod as I didn’t have time to set it up. If I had tried, the moment would’ve been lost.

Inspiration

I absolutely love photos of birds in flight. And, I absolutely love the colors of the ocean. I was thrilled to have this Osprey flying right in front of our deck over the water on multiple occasions. My friends called me out to the deck every time one flew by! It was a group effort and they were as happy as I was when I caught good shots of the osprey.

Editing

The only post processing was auto highlight button on my Apple computer.

In my camera bag

I always have a 50mm lens along with my 100-400 zoom lens. I keep extra batteries and cards and a lens cleaning kit.

Feedback

Patience and a steady hand are necessary to catch wildlife on the move. A crisp photo is a must, so if you don’t use a tripod, it helps to lean against something to avoid camera shake.
