__________
In late February, the cutting cold of winter kept most Oklahomans barricaded inside, and snow froze the garden grey. It felt like winter would surely never end.
I had been anxious for spring to arrive, as most gardeners are. While most everyone hibernated and waited for the last of winter to pass, I started sowing my seeds. In my room. On my bookshelf. In my room. It was like a dungeon: the smell of damp dirt as a variety of vegetables, perennials, annuals, and herbs germinated in trays in a corner, the grow lights emanating an eerie glow of red and blue from the corner. But finally! The tomato sprouts began wafting their sweet scent—and who doesn’t love that smell?
I’ve got 30+ tomato sprouts at the moment: 18 varieties, mostly heirlooms but also Romas, Supersweets, and a few other oddballs like Cherry Whites because, well, why not?
