This portrait was captured in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at The International Pleasure and Colt Grand Championships. We were in the middle this week long equine event and the clients who own Sidelined, from Missouri, asked if we could squeeze in some portraits. This shot was actually taken in the middle of a horse show ring due to the heavy rains outside (in between events, safety first!).Time
The International has morning and evening sessions. We decided to nab a few shots after a morning performance was over. We brought the horse in to the show arena. It was 1:00PM or so, not the best light for out of doors, not to mention the rain storm that was pelting the venue.Lighting
While shooting the horse show, we use 4-6 strobes to light the entire ring. I'd played with a 2 strobe set up and decided to drop to one. Sidelined is such a gorgeous horse, I thought a single strobe shooting down on him would add a little mystery to his already stellar appearance.Equipment
This was shot with a handheld Pentax K-1, 70-200mm 2.8, and one 1600W strobe. ISO 500 / 1/200 / f5.6Inspiration
Sidelined's beauty is enough to inspire anyone! He has quite a fiesty attitude, no mean, mind you, but very playful. This was a more quiet portrait of him and really captured his sweetness but also added some drama.Editing
Not much post-processing. Just simple color correction and brought in more shadow in the background. In my camera bag
Main camera is Pentax K1-Mark II, 70-200mm 2.8, back up Pentax K-3 body, 100mm macro, flash, and 24-70mm. My husband also shoots, so we share the 150-450mm Pentax lens, as well.Feedback
Patience. Horses take patience. When shooting horses, you have to pay attention to their ears (ears up, folks!), lines, confirmation, etc. You wouldn't want to do this particular shot with a horse with a long head, Roman nose, or if they're young and haven't filled out. Sidelined was around his four-year-old season when this shot was taken.
