The current church was built in late 11th century, on the foundations of an earlier Saxon church. The base of the squat west tower is Norman, and thought to datie from 1096. Originally it was a chapel which was part of the parish of Lesbury. After the Dissolutionof the Monisteries, Longhoughton became an independent parish, the first vicar was appointed in 1539.
