According to the myth, it was the Swedish legendary king Gylfe who allowed the goddess Gefion to keep the land she could plow out of Sweden during one night. Gefion turned her four giant sons into bulls, and with them she plowed out one area one night. What became Zealand was thrown into the sea between Funen and Sweden. The derelict hole came to Lake Mälaren. For a modern viewer, it would seem more likely to be about Lake Vänern, based on the extent of the lake. Snorre calls the lake Logr, and there is a tradition of perceiving it as Lake Mälaren. The fountain's official name is Gefion, which with its axes plows Zealand out of Sweden.
