Location
This photo was taken on a photo safari to East Africa, my only trip there (so far) and my first photography trip. I was just learning photography and didn't have great equipment, but this amazing and busy Lilac-breasted Roller Bird decided to show off his beauty right in front of me. Fortunately, I got this one right!Time
In the Serengeti National Park, we went out shooting photos at sunrise and just before sunset. This was on a morning outing, but not very early that morning.Lighting
Usually 9 am or so isn't the best time for photos, but in this case there was a light cloud cover so it worked well. When you are shooting birds from a vehicle on an old track, you don't have a lot of choices of light direction or brightness but in this case, it wasn't bad.Equipment
I had a Canon 60D with an EF70-300 f/4-5.6 lens attached. We were shooting from a (stopped, turned-off) pop-top vehicle, stabilizing our shots with bean bags on the top of the sides.Inspiration
Quite simply, this is the most colorful and beautiful bird I've ever seen!Editing
These were beautiful right out of the camera, so an adjustment of the RAW file for white balance, a little added contrast, and a crop were all that were done.In my camera bag
At the time this was taken, I was using Canon 60D and a couple of lenses. Now I'm shooting with Olympus, so have an M1X and a range of lenses in the bag, plus a Peak Design tripod attached.Feedback
We got amazingly near to this bird, I thought, but still, I used 105mm focal length. This brought the bird close and gave the background a nice bokeh.
