Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Wild Horse Mesa in the San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado. There’s 35,000 acres where the wild horses run free. There are some homes located at Wild Horse Mesa.

Time

This is one of my favorite herds. I remember seeing them walking towards me on the dirt road and I was so happy that I found them on that day. This image was taken March 7, 2019 at 12:15pm. That day was my Mom’s birthday and I was missing her so I decided to go to my most favorite place to lift my spirits. The sky was amazing that day and I found so many different bands of wild horses that day. It was an amazing day at Wild Horse Mesa.

Lighting

On this particular day it was very bright and sunny. Lucky for me the sky was beautiful and had lots of cloud so it softened the brightness. I didn’t feel like it was very harsh.

Equipment

This image was shot with my iPhone. When I take my professional camera to photograph the wild horses it sometimes scares them. They don’t seem to notice my iPhone. The wild horses in Southern Colorado will come pretty close to you so a huge camera and lens sometimes make them skittish.

Inspiration

I am a true animal lover. My favorite animal has always been horses. Every chance I get I drive to the Mesa to photography them. I think they are so majestic and beautiful.

Editing

When I use my iPhone I use two different apps. One for HDR and one just for more of an artsy feel.

In my camera bag

One of my favorite sayings is “The best camera is the one you always have with you”. That camera for me is my iPhone. I also have a Nikon D750 with a wildlife lens.

Feedback

Get out an explore your area and surrounding areas. You can always find something beautiful to capture.
