Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Bow Lake in Banff National Park. We were not originally planning to visit there, but decided to quickly stop, because of the beautiful views of Bow Lake from the road above. We had to trudge through deep snow for this picture but was completely worth it in the end, plus made for a great adventure!

Time

This is one of my favourite images, as I wasn’t planning on taking anything here. It was mid afternoon, on a very cold January day. It was below -20°C and everything seemed frozen in time, yet you can feel the energy buzzing around you. This photo was taken on January 20th 2017 at 3pm

Lighting

There wasn’t much sunlight, as it was snowing before the photo was taken, and the next snow cloud was quickly approaching, yet the sun just barely streamed through the clouds to create a soft glow behind Crowfoot Mountain in the background.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D5100 with the kit lens provided. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

The energy around me inspired me to take the photo. Everything was still, quiet and frozen. It had almost felt that time has stopped. That is one of the best reasons to visit the Rocky Mountains of Canada during the winter months. Everything is quiet and still, yet so much energy is around you that you can feel it, everything is alive, you just can’t see it. Once I saw the bridge that was over the frozen lake, I decided to take a picture to show the feeling of stillness, yet powerful feeling.

Editing

For this particular photo, I edited it on Adobe Lightroom. I didn’t change much other than exposure, contrast and added some blue tones to further create a wintery image. My goal in taking photos is to show the simple beauty of nature, so I try to edit all my photos in a way to enhance the original image, instead of completely altering it.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D5100 in my bag, along with my Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens, and my Nikon 55-200mm zoom lens. I like to also bring my tripod with me. Other items I have in my bag at all times, is a lens cleaner and an extra memory card!

Feedback

The Rocky Mountains of Canada are very raw and untouched. They can be very unpredictable, and the weather can change in a matter of minutes. Being patient is important, so bring warm winter gear and a good pair of snow boots and wait it out! Sometimes it’s only a matter of 2 minutes where the sun will shine in the perfect spot.
