Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a cruise called Shiprocked. We were actually out in the middle of the ocean for this.

Time

This show was in the evening. It was great because everyone had a few drinks already and having a really good time. It did make me a little nervous trying to keep people from knocking my camera out of my hands while they were dancing, but it's part of the job. : )

Lighting

You know, the lighting situation with me is kind of funny. I know nothing about lighting. Zero. I'm a musician who picked up a camera fairly recently. All I know about photography is that I'm trying to capture those beautiful moments during shows where people are just really feeling in the moment. Instead of investing in lighting when I'm clueless, I just let the lights from the shows I'm at do the job. No flash or anything. Thanks show lighting guys!

Equipment

I used a Canon 5d Mark IV with a 70-200 lens. I like to get a different perspective than the photographers crowded up near the front of the stage.

Inspiration

The moment. This man was in this moment that is absolutely beautiful. When photographing concerts I get to see these beautiful moments that may be brief, but someone is 100% in the present and loving it. They are doing what they love and truly feeling that. My goal in all my photography is to capture this moment even if I'm just shooting shows for free forever.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Photoshop. Like I said, I have no clue what I'm doing with my camera settings and half the time if I shoot on manual or even aperture priority I end up with photos that are blurry, dark, etc but I work with them. I'm worried more about getting a photo at the right time more than having my settings perfect anyway. I'll just use these programs to highlight the moment I captured, even if I have to bring the exposure up...a lot.

In my camera bag

Just my camera, lens, SD cards, and a second battery. I try to keep it light.

Feedback

I don't know how qualified I am to give advice, but I'd say just look for these magical times where people are really truly living. If your settings aren't perfect you can adjust that in editing. I think the technical stuff will come with it eventually, but if I spent a lot of time getting my settings perfect I'd miss a lot of good shots.
