Location
This was taken indoors, on a wooden table i purchased from a local thrift store. The backdrop was new and a perfect candidate for a sunlight filter.Time
Afternoon thrusts ample sunlight into my studio. Knowing this, I set everything up angled just right. However I had to take my shots quickly because once clouds cover the sun, the light diminishes quickly, especially 10 floors up in my Toronto based condo.Lighting
The window lighting was based on chance more than preparation; the weather here tends to change very quickly, as does the intensity of light through the window. The flame of the candle had to be extinguished simultaneously with burst shots from my camera.Equipment
This was shot on a Manfrotto Mangus VT-350 tripod, Sony A7RIi, no flash, and 50 mm prime lens.Inspiration
Smoky images have a mysteriously beautiful appeal. And much of what I read and watch involves a form of energy being transformed from one plane of existence into another. Smoke from a freshly extinguished candle represents the passing of a soul, or love, or life from one state of existence into another.Editing
I use raw for many of my works. And contrast is big in my post processing. Although the black and blue fringing is bold, I left it alone because this middle section of the photo provides a visual bridge between the smoke and the bronze candle holder. The drama speaks loudly here.In my camera bag
Sony A7rii, 50mm lens, 55-210mm lens, variable polarizer, 2 sd cards, battery pack, Neweer portable aluminum tripod with detachable monopod, and plenty of imagination and patience.Feedback
Think contrast when capturing smoke. The background does not always need to be black. The key to this shot was NOT only the speed of shots taken but the simultaneous extinguishing of a flame and the burst shooting. Experiment. There wasn't anything about this shoot that was automatically successful. Sometimes, a sense of urgency can create a synchronization of shots fired at the right time.
