Behind The Lens

Location

I retired and now live in Thailand. My garden has a few cone flowers, and in the early summers they really bring in the butterflies. Sunny days brings many more than normal. This day I sat down in the grass next to the flowers and just watched to see what happened. After a few minutes this pair of butterflies were fighting for the flower. I got lucky they both were in the same viewplane and focus.

Time

Most of the best time with the butterflies here is mid mornings, about 9am, before the heat sets in. Later in the day we get a lot of rain, so that's not a good time either.

Lighting

Always natural light is the best as far as I am concerned. If a dull day, I find different things to shoot. Of course morning and evening light are best.

Equipment

Nikon D810, Nikon 24-120 1.4 AF S ED G. Hand held.

Inspiration

Whats not to inspire? Butterflies and cool flowers. Usually way overdone in most peoples portfolios, but once in a while one pops out as different. That's what I like; different. At least when I can do it. Not easy though, but I always keep and eye out.

Editing

99% of the time, just cropping. I may remove something from a background like trash or something that doesn't belong, and sometimes kick up the light in shadows. I really dislike over-post processed shots. Old school I suppose.

In my camera bag

Nikon D810, Nikon 24-120 1.4 G, Tamron 100-400 5.6, Nikor 20mm 2.8 Non-AF

Feedback

Patience! Know when things typically happen by being familiar with the subject. Look around for the best light and background. So plan ahead when you can. When you can't plan, at least get the best light and move to eliminate bad backgrounds. You can do that by the first shot.
