A Baul singing at Shanibarer Haat (a rural open air market held on Saturdays) at Sonajhuri on the banks of the River Khowai, near Shantiniketan, West Bengal. The Bauls are a community of travelling minstrels native to parts of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam in India. Although a heterogeneous community, the religious influence in their music is mostly inspired by Vaishnaba lore of Hinduism and the Sufi sect of the Muslims. A considerable amount of their music also deals with non-religious subjects from everyday life.
