Location
This photo was shot in Alberta, Canada in February just before the sunset on a very cold, -30C degree and windy day.Time
It was shot very near to sunset in early February, so that is not very late in the day at that time of year!Lighting
This is natural light, nearing sunset in February when the days are short. This was an extremely cold day during one of the coldest months in recorded weather history. I made it a point to try and shoot during this cold stretch to capture the light that it would provide.Equipment
I'm a Nikon guy, and since I'm an amputee, I don't carry a lot of gear, preferring to use variable focal length lenses. I had made it a point to carry a tripod that winter and I did use one on this shot.Inspiration
This was my first winter back in Canada after having spent five years living in S.E. Asia, being based in Cambodia. I was simply blown away by the light that the short winter days provided. In Asia, the sun is pretty much overhead year round and the proximity to the equator means there is not a lingering twilight period like there is in the northern reaches of the planet. I had somewhat forgotten just how gorgeous and shapely the light is during the winter because the sun doesn't rise very high above the horizon so there is a lot of side lighting to provide dimension. I was driving back to the secluded cabin on a frozen lake that I was living in for that winter and I saw this scene, and thought it was worth a look, so instead of saying to myself, "Oh we'll get it next time.", I turned around and went back to shoot it...sure glad I did!Editing
Some things are best learned through self experimentation, but I will say that I am a big fan of Lightroom! I do appreciate the control that it allows in specific areas with the brushes and filters. In my camera bag
I'm a Nikon guy, currently shooting with D800's, and since I'm an amputee, I don't carry a lot of gear, preferring to use variable focal length lenses.Feedback
My only advice is, if you see something, go back, turnaround, or take the time to stop and shoot it. Too many times over the years I've not made the effort to get a shot I've seen, and wish I had when the conditions didn't get back to what was witnessed...
