Behind The Lens

Location

The Photograph was taken at Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary. Every Year between December to March, this Bird Sanctuary has many Migratory as well as Resident Birds. Flamingos are one of the attractions over here. It is located around 100 km away from the city of Pune.

Time

I visit this Bird Sanctuary every year. I reached the sanctuary at around 5 am by traveling around 100 km from my city of residence. Early morning I got good shots of Flamingos, Ibis, painted storks, etc. As the sun rose in the late morning around 11 am, predator birds like Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Falcons started showing up. That is the perfect time to photograph these beauties when they are in search of their food.

Lighting

This Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary is a big water body in which you have to travel through small rowing boats to sight various birds. In the following scenes, the Osprey was sitting on a huge pole which was in direction of the sun, so I couldn't get good pictures. I told the boat person to turn the boat on the opposite side of the pole so get good lighting, As we reached the opposite side slowly and without making any noise we got some good shots from the other side. I was lucky, that the bird was there in the same location till my boat moved slowly on the other side by taking a huge turn around, maintaining a good amount of radius around the bird so that he doesn't become alert.

Equipment

This shot was taken using my Nikon D5200 and with a Sigma 150-600 mm Lens. This shot was taken handheld as it was quick action.

Inspiration

I do Bird Photography as a hobby and passion. I love to spend time in nature while photographing birds and their behavior. I am always fascinated about predator birds due to their hunting skills, speed, agility, their long vision of spotting the prey, and their strategy. These beasts have amazing claws (toes) and amazing catching skills. I visit this bird sanctuary mostly to capture such predator birds. I was looking for such type of shot for a long time.

Editing

The following behavior of the bird was undetectable and quick, I had shot this in Burst mode with higher shutter speed. So in some photographs, the framing was inappropriate. I had to crop and re-frame the photograph, did add a little bit of sharpness to highlight the scales on the fish.

In my camera bag

I have a normal Vanguard ZIIN 39 bag in which I keep my equipment. While I go for Birding, I have my basic camera body - Nikon D5200 with me. For the lens part, I prefer a telephoto lens and one zoom lens. I usually keep Nikkor 200-500 mm or Sigma 150-600 mm for the telephoto lens and Tamron 70-300 mm for the Zoom lens. For the accessories part, I have always 2 extra batteries with me and extra memory cards so that I don't fall short on batteries or storage.

Feedback

Bird or Wildlife photography is unpredictable and unexpected. One day you may be lucky and get really good shots and sightings and someday you would return with nothing in camera to capture. You have to be ready for challenges, and ready to face disappointments. When you are capturing the bird, remember that they are always moving, they hardly sit or rest in someplace for a long time. So to be able to shoot Birds, always approach them slowly, don't make eye contact, approach in a diagonal manner rather than heading straight towards them, use camouflage clothes so that you are hard to notice, don't make any noise (even the smallest) while approaching birds from a close distance. For camera settings keep the autofocus on continuous focusing mode, keep the burst mode on for such flight or action shots.
