Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my flower garden. Right in front of my porch.

Time

This was taken around 10 in the morning, the moth had hatched around 2 hours earlier.

Lighting

I had great natural lighting that day, slight overcast so no harsh lighting.

Equipment

I used a 20.1 megapixel Sony Alpha A300 with a 16-55mm f/3.5-5.6 standard zoom lens. No flash and no tripod.

Inspiration

I had to document this amazing Moth, it's one of the largest in the world, and that I found the cocoon the night before, I knew I would probably never get a chance like this again.

Editing

I used GIMP and sharpened the image slightly and deepened the contrast to really see the color contrast of the oranges and white/creams against the green and purple/pink of the flowers and leaves.

In my camera bag

My Sony Alpha A3000, the 16-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, plenty of memory cards, my collapsible tripod and lens cleaning supplies.

Feedback

Lots of patience. Moths can be very jittery. Give them time to settle down and get comfortable and once they do, they usually dont move after that unless they are spooked. If you want to get a lot of detail on small things like the fuzz on this moth, manual focus is your friend, or if you have a camera with infinite focus, take the time to really play with the options it gives you and you can really get fine details with manual focus.
