The photo was taken during a very cold and windy winter morning on the ice of lake Peipus in Estonia. Every winter the ice starts to stack up near the shore and the highest stacks reach the height of nearly 10 meters.Time
I remember that I arrived very early in the morning that day. The stars where still visible in the sky when I headed to the lake to find a composition that would well with the arriving dawn. I think it was something like -15C and strong wind at that time when I walked from one stack to another to find a composition with the lines leading to the dawn colored sky. I think I was very lucky to find a scene that was satisfied with and the wait for the perfect colours was on. Since it was very cold I had to keep one battery in the glove to keep it warm since Sony batteries die very fast in extreme cold.Lighting
The best time to shoot landscape scenes is during sunrise or sunset. There are exception ofcourse but the colorful sky accompanied with something leading to it on the ground makes a great photo any day.Equipment
This shot was taken with Sony A7 II and Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art (Canon) lens that was attached using Sigma MC-11 adapter. I am using Sirui T-2205X carbon tripod together with K-20X ball head.Inspiration
I have always wanted to take a photo of the ice stacks together with colorful dawn sky. Wintertime in Estonia does not offer clear skies very often and I think it's third winter for me to hunt for the perfect sky during winter on the ice of lake Peipus.Editing
I used to 3 different images to blend together for increased dynamic range in Aurora HDR. I recently started to use it and I think it's the best HDR blending software on the market at this point.In my camera bag
I am bringing 3 bodies with 3 different lenses attached to them most of the time. Canon 1DX with second hand Canon 300mm f2.8+2xTC to get a shot of birds and animals when I move around, Sony a7II with 24mm f1.4 Sigma ART lens and Canon 5D III with 135mm f2 portait lens or 70-200mm f4 lens.Feedback
Moments like that can be captured during early morning or after the sunset when the sun is barely under the horizon. For me the only option was to capture during morning since the sun rises from the east and lake is big enough so that only icy surface is breaking the sky on the picture.
