Location
This photo was taken in the Gold Butte National Monument just outside of Las Vegas with Sienna Hayes as the model.Time
We were out shooting some photos in golden hour when the sun started to set over the western mountains. Sienna climbed a small rock outcropping and I positioned myself to shoot her and the setting sun behind her.Lighting
As you can see I didn't use any lighting just the sun setting behind her which provided a great silhouette.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D, Mk3 and a Sigma 50mm, f/1.4 lens, hand held at 1/200 sec.Inspiration
I really like taking silhoettes and shooting into the sun. It provides a natural censoring of the photo while at the same time adding a bit of sensuality.Editing
I processed the photo in Lightroom adding a little saturation to the sunset and darkening the shadows just a bit.In my camera bag
I always have my Sigma 50mm when I'm shooting with models. I also carry a Canon 28-135mm f3.5-5.6.Feedback
Like I said above, I really like shooting silhouettes. Let your subject block the sun and increase your f stop and shutter speed to the point of just barely being able to capture the outline of the subject. I shoot most of my subjects on Aperture Priority, but with silhouettes, you have to switch to manual mode. I take one photo in Aperture Priority just to see what the camera is doing and then take those readings into Manual Mode and increase my shutter speed and aperture until I get something pleasing on the back of the camera.
