Stockport railway viaduct completed in 1840 to traverse the River Mersey on the Manchester to London Route. Built from 110 million bricks, 111 feet long in 22 semi-circular arches; remains one of the largest brick structures in the world. The M60 motorway crossing underneath was built in the 1980s over an earlier railway line. The flight path for Manchester airport is overhead with two aeroplanes landing lights in view above the Virgin Trains London bound service. Before the railway, the river was navigable from the sea at Liverpool, with trading ports along the bank. In medieval times cattle drovers met at a ford in the Mersey to sell cattle and Stockport was a market town before the industrial revolution when it became famous for hat making. Close by, are the remains of a Roman Road.
