Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local bar called the Orbit Room. It's an intimate bar downtown that serves a great selection of drinks and interesting food items.

Time

This was taken at night. This is one of my favorite photos. The Wonderhills is a local bluegrass/folk band with incredible musicians and uniw sound. This was an early photo helping me learn about low light photography. It was a wonderful experience and I remember how the crowd loved the music. It was a really fun night.

Lighting

This was a difficult venue to shoot in with very low light. I took plenty of photos and captured some great ones I am very proud of.

Equipment

This was shot on a Panasonic Lumix GH4, DG Vario-Elemerit 1:2.8-4, 12-60 ASPH lens.

Inspiration

I knew a member of the band and wanted to provide some shots for the band. This was actually my first time seeing the band in years. I was excited to shoot for them and to hear them jam.

Editing

This was done in lightroom. Honestly I was learning how to edit and wanted to give this photo some artistic flare. Smooth faces. You can tell it was dark but I wanted to lighten it up and give it some color that pops.

In my camera bag

I only own this camera and the one lens. If I need more equipment, I rent it but generally stick to a 50mm, and a medium zoom lens like a 35-10omm. I sometimes rent other lens but given the GH4 is micro 4/3, I don't have too many options to cover a large range for my budget.

Feedback

While I shoot many different things, I enjoy concert photography the most. It can be a difficult gig sometimes with flashing lights and interesting angles. You have to be aware of constantly changing ISO and adjust for it. I find it enjoyable as it can be a challenge but at the end of the show, you see how many great shots you did get. I would suggest having multiple lenses with different focal lengths and apertures to catch different styles of photo But really knowing how your camera works is the key. The real fun comes with editing RAW files. Dialing in to bring out certain elements or creating an atmosphere shows true skill as a photographer in my opinion. Have fun with it is my best advice!
