Behind The Lens

Location

This shot, like many others, was made in a small home studio, attached to the house where I live, in Angera, a small Italian village on the shores of Lake Maggiore, not far from Milan.

Time

Also in other descriptions concerning my photos you will see that, due to the fact of shooting in a personal studio, I do not have any time restriction. For this shot I can tell you that it was shortly after dinner time, but I'll talk about it in the section dedicated to the mood.

Lighting

What about lighting? This is perhaps a not usual but very simple scheme. The need was to create a silouette of the face that highlighted the smoke of the cigarette, without losing the detail of the hairstyle. Two flashes placed behind the model at an angle of about 30 degrees did their job well.

Equipment

As you can read from the shooting data I used my now faithful and generous Nikon D750, with the tireless 24-120 mounted and set near the focal 70 (66 to be precise). The Quadralite flash allows me 100 ISO and a comfortable F 9 with a shutter speed of 1/125. I could take me to the limit of the sync speed of 200, but I prefer to be more cautiously to 125, not to incur undesirable effects only for accidentally touched the wheel of the times ... When you take these photographs do like me, a nice tripod and l 'framing is where it must be. You have counterpoint lights that could give you problems by varying the angle, better to stay fixed in one point!

Inspiration

As I mentioned before, I had worked all afternoon on a shot with the model, Arianna. Arianna lives far away, and since I knew we would have done evening, we arranged to stop and leave the next day, just to avoid a long train ride at night. After dinner, chatting before going to sleep (everyone in his room :)) she looked at photos on IG. At a certain point she has shown me one photo telling "one day I have to find a photographer who makes me a picture like that!". I told her "do you want to find it during the day or is it okay to find it in the evening?" I placed the two flashes, and I said "let's shoot!". She loved me, or rather loved the photo ... That's all folks!

Editing

From Raw to Jpg is post-processing? I do not know, but shots like that require nothing more than small adjustments to the histogram curve.

In my camera bag

In the studio there is always a bit of everything, including modellers and soft boxes for flashes. But I would like to share with you some little comfort that can be useful. Connected to the camera I have a monitor where I can see with comfort and "big" both the shot and the parameters. It's very comfortable. I had the honor of hosting one of the best photographers in my area during my last shooting, Simone Soldà (look for him on the site, for now he's still shy, maybe he gives us a few more shots to admire), very well prepared and skilled, and we have agreed to prefer a computer in addition to the only monitor where you can analyze the shot with the utmost care.

Feedback

Working with flash means knowing how to imagine the light before it is there. Professional flashes like my Quadralite are equipped with modeling lights that can help you understand the final result, but the settings remain fundamental. Take test shots working with one flash at a time, so as to understand the effect, even if you are super accustomed to this type of lighting do everything calmly and check everything. Sometimes small changes are enough to radically change the result.
