Behind The Lens

Location

While working on assignment for a automotive documentary I captured this photograph of an original Shelby Cobra 427. This was at M1 Concours in Pontiac Michigan.

Time

This was taken around 11am-1pm during a cloudless August day. Not a great time to shoot a shiny automobile. As seen by the photoshopped overexposed hood.

Lighting

When I photograph automobiles I like very early mornings and late afternoons. Try to shoot in overcast sky's if you can. And carry a polarizing filter and use it to get the glare out of the glass and highlight off the hood

Equipment

I used to shoot with Nikon cameras. At this time I had a D800 with 24-70 f/2.8 hand held.

Inspiration

I always look at the background before every shot I take. At this angle I was able to have an unobscured background allowing me to close down the aperture for more depth of field and sharper image.

Editing

Had to use photoshop to darken the highlights and flare on the hood of the Cobra because of the cloudless sky and the high position of the sun.

In my camera bag

My kit is configured to the job at hand. This project was in the lines of photojournalism. So at the time I had a 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 lenses. I have a flash, extra batteries, memory and cleaning gear. Have to have a supply of water.

Feedback

When shooting automobiles, shoot from eye level with the headlights. Look at your background before you shoot. If it's crowded close down your aperture.
