Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Zion National Park

Time

I don't remember exactly what time it was, but it was probably mid to late morning because my family and I had been hiking for a while before this was taken. It was in the middle of summer, so I remember it was pretty warm already, the deer had stopped to drink some water from the creek and find some shelter in the shade, just before this photo was taken. I'm honestly lucky I was able to catch this photo because they were gone as quickly as they came.

Lighting

For this photo, I used the natural lighting of the sun. The way the sun hit the grass and the fawn was perfect, I couldn't have asked for more.

Equipment

This was shot using a Canon Rebel T3i, with an 18-55mm lens

Inspiration

This photo came about because the fawn was lagging behind and trying to catch up to its family. While we were hiking, my family and I noticed a family of deer, a mother, and her two fawns. As soon as I saw them, I knew I had to take a picture or I would regret it. So I turned on my camera and started shooting. Just as I got my camera ready, they began to leave, so I decided to take a panning shot of them. I was able to get a few photos of the family of deers, but this one was my favorite by far.

Editing

Because I'm still an amateur, most of the time I have to correct the exposure and lighting, but in this case, I loved the raw photo so much that I felt no need to edit it.

In my camera bag

I'm by no means a professional photographer, instead, photography is my hobby. I'm also self-taught, so I don't have much knowledge of what equipment to use for which photo, so I often find my camera, an extra battery, and a smaller lens is enough for me.

Feedback

National Parks are a great place for photos like this because you never know what you might find. So, my best advice is to always be ready. Many times, photos like these come about because you happened to be in the right place at the right time. In such cases, it is essential to have your camera ready to capture that perfect moment.
