Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my hometown of Castlegar BC. I was looking for a location for night compositions and ended up on the shores of Arrow Lakes, where the local pulp mill became my subject for the photo shoot.

Time

It was just after dark, late enough for the stars to be shining high above the clear Kootenay skies.

Lighting

it was a clear starry sky, the only lights surrounding me were the warm lights of the street lamps on the bridge and the neighborhood across the river. The still water and steam reflecting the lights of the mill in the distance gave off enough of a glow to capture this moment.

Equipment

The equipment used for the photo was; Canon EOS t3 rebel camera paired with a 18-200 mm sigma lens, placed upon at Vangaurd Alta series 70 tripod.

Inspiration

I have been working and living around the pulp mill for years and have always wanted to capture the extravagant look it created at night.

Editing

The lights of the mill took over the original photo so I made a few adjustments to the exposure, highlights, and shadows to balance it all out, turning that photo into what it is today.

In my camera bag

My bag is very empty! At the time I only packed my camera, the lens attached to it, cleaning supplies and three spare batteries to last me on long adventures. It was an amazing starter set up that I could take with me everywhere. Since then my bag hasn't changed much, just upgraded the camera to a Canon EOS R with a 28-300mm L series attached to it. Which turns out is 10x the weight of my previous set up, but sooo worth it! I still take it with me everywhere!

Feedback

Get out there and explore the night with a creative attitude, bag full of batteries and a tripod. Patience is key! I was out that night for several hours taking pictures 15 seconds at a time changing each shot ever so slightly until I was satisfied with the composition.
