Behind The Lens

Location

Monument Valley on the Utah-Arizona border as seen from The Valley of The Gods.

Time

I woke up before 6am to drive from Bluff, UT to the Valley of the Gods to capture first light on the Seven Sailors rock formation. This scene is looking south east from that location. The clouds were very cooperative that morning.

Lighting

Fast moving clouds offered various lighting opportunities aided by low early morning light.

Canon 70D, 70-200 F2.8 lens Aperture f/4?ISO 100?Shutter 1/400?Focal Length 200/1, tripod Manfrotto MK290XT, Manfrotto 410 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head with 410PL Quick Release Plate

Inspiration

Everything about Utah landscapes are inspiring. This state is like no other place on the planet for landscape photography. Every 20 miles or so the scenery changes radically with unlimited views to capture. If you like rock formations you will not be disappointed in what there is to offer. There are a multitude of National and state parks to choose from.

Editing

Just your standard adjustments when you are shooting in RAW along with some minor cropping.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 5D Mll with the Canon 24-105 F4 stabilized lens. This is my go to setup 90% of the time. I also have my Canon 70D cropped sensor DSLR with my Canon 200mm F2.8 non stabilized telephoto lens. This translates to a 112mm-320mm equivalent lens. I really like this combination of camera bodies and lenses because I almost never need to change lenses to get the framing I desire. This means less chance of getting dust on my sensors. I also have a couple of 550EX strobes with a Gary Fong diffuser. 77mm circular polarizing filter which fits both my lenses. I usually only carry one camera body and lens along with the tripod when feasible. These are great cameras but they are rather heavy when combined.

Feedback

Get up early, stay late, watch for changing weather patterns to get the best lighting conditions. Scout out the best angles keeping in mind foregrounds and background points of interest or distractions. Get off the beaten path to find the best compositions. Remember to look behind you after you get your original composition. Often times there will be amazing scenes that you may have overlooked when you where focused on your main target.
