Magnificent shot… Great lighting and color… It really tells the story and sets the mood… I love the way the eye moves from the dull lower left to the spectacular burst of color…LC "Dutch" - FoxMetz Images

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken right by my mothers house in Franklin Co Virginia. I was on my way to her house one evening when I saw this beautiful view and I just had to stop and capture it.

Time

It was around 6 in the evening one Friday or Saturday in November when I got this shot. I'll never forgot it because my young daughter was with me and we must have stayed on the side of that road for 30 minutes that day.

Lighting

The lighting is actually what drew me to this spot that day. The sun happened to be going down as we passed and the sunlight literally dance across those hills that day. I've lived near this spot almost my entire life and I have never seen it so beautiful.

Equipment

I just had my camera with me that day, I used no external light source, just the sun. Mother Nature was on my side that evening.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the natural beauty of that moment, not only with my camera but with my daughter as well.

Editing

I actually did not have to do too much with this shot in post, I hit one of those opportunities where everything fell into place all at once. I increased the saturation a bit and added a little HDR to really capture those details as best I could.

In my camera bag

I always have my camera with me! Always! When I do need to take my camera bag with me I make sure to have at least three lenses, usually a prime lens, a 28-70mm, and a telephoto. As for lighting I keep my alien bee with me but in situations where using that light isn't the best, I will have a speed light with some extra batteries. One can never have enough batteries!

Feedback

My biggest advice to anyone is to always keep your eyes open! The thing I hear the most from others who are starting out is that they "don't have an eye yet." You get an eye for photography by practicing! Composition of a photograph is just as important as getting the shutter speed correct. Don't always get so caught up by the technical stuff, just go out, keep your eyes peeled, and photograph that which moves you!
