Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of Pigeon Point light house was taken from Pigeon Point viewpoint parking area

Time

After driving down the night before and sleeping in my SUV I took this photo at 7:44am

Lighting

I went for a long exposure on this one to capture the water in a blur. The long exposure also let me keep my ISO at 100 while shooting at f16 to increase the depth of field.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon D7200. Camera was on tripod for a 30sec shot at f16 17mm ISO 100 using a Nikon remote control

Inspiration

I had been on-site all night taking pictures of the night sky. After getting a few hours of sleep before my 2hr drive home I was greeted with this view with the sun just coming up behind me. Had to take the shot

Editing

This was a RAW shot so I did some basic adjustments in Lightroom to get the look/feel I was going for. Nothing to crazy on this one

In my camera bag

I’m a heave packer. I always have at least 2 camera and multiple lenses wide and zoom as I never know what I might run across while out exploring.

Feedback

The California coast has many great photo opportunities up and down the coast. I like to use photo planning apps like PhotoPills to plan my shots so I know where the sun and moon will me at a given time. Use a tripod and take your time composing the shot. Move around for the best composition then wait for the right moment. Don’t rush the shot and get there early.
