Location
La Toscana Nel Cuore bike shop in Lucca Italy. The shop is owned by my friends Laurie and Mauro and shot has a companion photo of Mauro repairing a bike which has also won several awards.Time
The shot was taken in the morning when the shop has a lot of natural light is coming in.Lighting
I did not use any additional light other than the normal lights in the store and the daylight spill coming into the store.Equipment
For this shot I used a tripod and shot with my Sony 6300 mirrorless camera. The lens I used was Sony's 1.8 35 mm lens. It is an extremely sharp lens which produces excellent results in low light.Inspiration
Peppi the dog features in the shot runs the shop, or so he thinks. Laurie wanted a good shot of the two of them together to blow up and mount of the wall in the store.Editing
I wanted to give the photo a 3-D look so in Photoshop I used several brushes to paint the background and soften the look of the dog. Also I used a comb brush of Laurie's hair to add more dimension.In my camera bag
I made the switch 2 years ago to Sony mirrorless. I have been totally happy with the results. Not only does the camera have great resolution, it's lite. I used to be a professional video cameraman/director who also shot a lot of stills with Canon and Nikon cameras, quite frankly after years of lugging heavy cameras lens and tripods all over the world my body needed a break. Now my camera is ultra lite and with the fast lens I use working in low light or late at night is no problem. For wide angle work I use a Sigma 16mm 1.4 lens. For long shots I have Sony 4.5 to 6.3 55 - 210 zoom. The real workhorse lens in my bag is my Sony 1.8 35mm.Feedback
Whenever possible shoot at 100 ASA and have your iris just a bit under exposed. The results will be very sharp and not overly bright. You can always lighten a dark shot but it's really difficult to darken an over exposed shot. Also experiment with Photoshop try different looks and filters you may be amazed by the results. I also paint with shadow and light to heighten the drama in a photo.
