Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Butterfly Garden, in Dubai, during a trip.

Time

If I remember correctly, it was a little past noon. We were walking through the path inside the butterfly garden, and this woman was surrounded by Monarch butterflies. She saw me with the camera and asked if I would like to capture the scene.

Lighting

It was just ambient lighting, which is beautiful inside the garden.

Equipment

This was shot freehand, with an EOS 6D MKII, a 70-200, f/2.8 canon lens and ISO 1000, using only ambient light.

Inspiration

It was a spur of the moment thing, actually. I started photographing this woman, who was surrounded by butterflies, and when I saw the one on her hand, I thought the constrast of the butterfly colors on the woman’s beautifully manicured hand would make for a nice shot.

Editing

Yes, I desaturated most of the image, added some vignetting and emphasized the butterfly’s colors a little bit.

In my camera bag

My Canon EOS 6D MKII, the 70-200 f/2.8, and a Tamron 24-70 f/2.0, plus my tripod and a couple ND filters.

Feedback

Be mindful of your surroundings, because things are happening around you all the time. If you see something or someone that’s doing something cool around you, talk to them, see if you can take their picture, connect with your subjects. That will help you create some good pictures.
