Behind The Lens

Location

For some years the family would come to Corpus Christy from all over the US to celebrate Thanksgiving. Many times I drove by the US aircraft carrier Lexington on 181 without a second thought. It sets in the bay lit in blue at night in all its majesty. I finally found time to take a tour of the ship and I am glad I did it.

Time

I took this image at mid afternoon on Thanksgiving day walking off the turkey and dressing. Usually the

Lighting

I liked the way the blue of the sky was reflected in the water and wanted to capture that. In order to tame the rough wind driven water and get a smooth blue water I decided to use a 10stop neutral density filter.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D mark iv with my walk around 24 to 105mm f4. To smooth the water I used a Lee 10 stop neutral density filter all mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

This photo has been taken at this location many times but I thought I would try to give my interpretation. My father was on the US carrier The Sargent Bay during World War II. The tour of the Lexington give me some insight into how he must have felt serving on his ship. This second Lexington, the blue ghost, served gallantly during the war and many brave seamen gave their lives for our country on this historic ship. To me the long leading line ending at the ship is like a tie to history from today to the hero’s of the past.

Editing

Very little processing was needed.

In my camera bag

I am usually a planner and have a general idea what equipment I will need for that days photography. When going light and on the run I just take a shoulder bag with one lens a few extra batters and memory cards and a cleaning cloth of some kind. Other days I may load the backpack with multiple lenses and a variety of equipment to match my needs.

Feedback

Nothing specific other than trying to find a time void of crowds.
