Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

Time

It was late in the day and the sun had set and the heat was beginning to diminish so the dogs were becoming more active. There were 4 young pups who were playing, or arguing, over some sticks.

Lighting

As the sun had set the light was very even and the bright contrast of the day had disappeared and I increased the ISO to 2500

Equipment

I used a Nikon D850 with a 400 mm f2.8 lens. This was handheld and the camera settings were 1/500 sec at f4.0, ISO 2500

Inspiration

This was my first visit to Mana Pools and it's one of the few parks in Africa where you can go on foot. For this photo I was lying on the ground and was level with the dogs height and ensured nice blurred foreground.

Editing

There was very little post processing performed on this photo with the exception of a few tweeks in Lightroom mainly increasing the white levels to male the dogs 'pop' a little more.

In my camera bag

When travelling I take 2 cameras and 3 lenses. Cameras are the Nikon D850 and D810, along with a Nikon 400 mm f.28, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. Although I have now switched to mirrorless and am using the Nikon Z7ii.

Feedback

Get as low to the ground as you can and I usually try and fill the frame with the subject, particularly if the landscape isn't very interesting.
