Location
Photo was taken from the second floor of our home in Scottsdale Arizona.Time
Photo was taken about 10 in the morning, in December. Was surprised they were still using the nest that late in the year.Lighting
All natural lighting. Was the perfect time of day, even thought the birds were in the shade, the sun was filtering through the tree which provided just enough light to get the picture.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon EOS 5DS R, 300 mm f/4 Canon lens, on a MeFOTO Globe Trotter Tripod.Inspiration
I had shot humming birds before, but this was unusual because of the location. I noticed them through a window from inside the house. The nest was probably twenty feet above the ground and from below completely hidden. These two were just hanging out, almost posing for the camera.Editing
Post processing was minimal. In Lightroom, adjusted the raw image's profile color and exposure slightly. Did some very minor noise reduction (ISO was 400). Also cropped the image. In my camera bag
Kind of depends on what I am going out to shoot. But generally I carry three lenses. A 70 - 300mm f 4, a 24 - 70mm f2.8, and for wide angle 17 - 40mm f1.4. Also the MeFOTO Globe Trotter Tripod.Feedback
Shooting any kind of wildlife is always a challenge. Birds especially can be pretty hit or miss. Capturing them out in the wild is always a combination of being in the right place at the right time, being very patient and being lucky. I usually go out in the late afternoon as the light is better and the birds tend be out and about more. I take the 300mm lens and most of the time no tripod. Although it is a little tricky to balance the available light in the late afternoon and a long lens. In this case, I was able to shoot from my house, which was really unusual.
