Behind The Lens

Location

Long exposure shot of the full Moon shining brightly in hazy sky over Mediterranean Sea and the city of Tirat Carmel next to Haifa, Israel. Photo was made in the Mount Carmel National Park from the top of Carmel mountain range.

Time

This photo I made during a long night walking trip on the Carmel mountain range at about 3:15 AM, night was beautiful and I found myself very inspired so 25 km of night trekking were just enjoyable.

Lighting

Full moon, haze and dust in the atmosphere made all stars invisible for eyes, not for camera, but currents in the air full of tiny shining particles made lighting very unusual, combined with artificial lighting of Tirat Carmel and heavy light pollution from nearby industrial Haifa it resulted in interesting coloring of the environment.

Equipment

Ye olde Nikon D80 Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art Tripod Manfrotto 190XPROB

Inspiration

Fairy lighting and weather conditions during night walk in beautiful mountainside - that’s pretty enough for being totally inspired to make a shot when finally reached next view spot.

Editing

I always look for capturing the real magic of this world, so I search and wait for natural lighting suitable for photography and capture maximum with the camera. So only minimal processing of light balance in the RAW file was needed.

In my camera bag

Usually I take just my Nikon D750 with Nikkor 50 f/1.4G or Sigma 35 mm f/1.4 Art lense and everything to keep them clean while walking. For something more extreme such as night hiking in undefined weather conditions I take my old Nikons D80 camera, which is not so valuable if I loose it somehow. Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod I use for nigh photography and for landscape photos that were planned in advance to make them maximally accurate

Feedback

You should really love what you do and have a lot of patience and enthusiasm. Walking out of the home at midnight and hiking in mountainside until the morning doesn’t guarantee you making any good shot, the lighting could be not so good, or you might not reach the view spot in the night, so you just have to love and enjoy the process itself and sometimes the world around would become magical for photography then you just have to be ready.
