Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken in my living room studio at my home in Haverhill, Suffolk. With limited space to work, I enjoy experimenting with lighting techniques.

Time

The image was taken in the afternoon using a single studio light source.

Lighting

I'm drawn in by images that have high contrast between light and shadow and a lot of my personal portfolio work centres around lowkey photography. Using a single light source and positioning this light to capture interesting images highlighting the contrast between highlights and shadows.

Equipment

Nikon D750, Nikon 50mm F1.8, one studio light camera right

Inspiration

Having worked with the model before I was aware that he had most of his body covered in tattoos. I also knew prior to the session that I would be shooting for black and white. I wanted to show off the artwork on the models body using lowkey lighting setup to add drama and contrast.

Editing

Very minimal post-processing was done to the image. Basic level corrections only.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D750, Nikon 24-120mm F4 VR, Nikon 50mm prime, 2 x speedlites and a reflector.

Feedback

If you're aiming for this type of lighting setup (lowkey) it's imperative that your chosen light source either has a model light or is continuous light. A single light setup allows for so much experimentation. A slight adjustment to the models head position would result in a pretty cool 'Rembrandt lighting' look.
