Behind The Lens

Location

For the last several centuries, an Open Air Market has been held every Wednesday and Saturday along the banks of one of the seven Rhine River canals in the old walled city of Leiden in the Netherlands.

Time

Mid morning

Lighting

Natural sunlight

Equipment

Hand-held Point-and-Click Fuji 6900Zoom 3 megapixel camera. Working within the known limits of the camera, virtually any daylight scene can be captured with a pocket camera or phone camera. The artist's eye composing the shot usually is a bigger factor than the equipment used. One commentor suggested the ratio is 90% photographer's eye, 10% equipment.

Inspiration

The colors of the flowers for sale caught my eye. I was inspired by the flower saleswoman's infectious smile. I asked if I could take her picture, and she was thrilled to be chosen as a model.

Editing

I used PhotoShop to denoise, sharpen, color enhance, and straighten the horizon. In my workflow, I always denoise before sharpening because I don't want to sharpen noise.

In my camera bag

When I am not deliberately out to photograph something, I always carry a small point-and-click camera. Great photography has an interesting subject seen from an interesting angle, as seen in wonderful light. If you don't have a camera in hand, you can't capture the interesting subject which appears unexpectedly. This photo was an unplanned discovery as I was walking through the open air market.

Feedback

Keep a camera with you at all times so when an interesting subject strikes your fancy, you are able to capture the memory in front of you. When Bigfoot comes out of the woods to take a look at you, you can only take Bigfoot's picture if you have a camera in hand.
