Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a house that I rented for the shoot in Houston, Texas. I am a self taught photographer who is totally colorblind hence all my images are in B&W except for flowers and etc. and those are just posted straight from the camera with no changes whatsoever.

Time

Shooting with this model is a photographer's dream. The image was taken in window light on the north side of the house and the light was soft and just wrapped around her. The curtains on the window filtered the light just enough. I used no tripod as I shoot handheld so I have the freedom of movement. It was done about 10 AM which was at the peak of the lighting in this particular room.

Lighting

The lighting with most of my images indoors is always done with natural light and then letting a white wall do the work of wrapping it around the model. This particular shot was done in a room with north light filtered by the curtains and was just about ready to move. The sun was very close to moving away from this side of the house. We had been roving from room to room checking the light so that it would give us the shots that we wanted.

Equipment

At this time I was shooting with a Nikon 3200 with a Tamron 28-300 lens as I am not able to move around as fast as I used to at 80 years of age. I don't carry a lot of gear with me for the weight bothers my back. I always remember from my military days the line-keep it simple.

Inspiration

The lighting was just right for what the model was wearing at the time. This shoot also produced a number of beautiful nudes which are in the collections area of my site.

Editing

I am kind of technically challenged so I use Photoshop Elements and mostly look at the curves feature and will sometimes move just slightly. Never anything major because if I have to do a lot of post processing then I am not doing the photography correctly.

In my camera bag

I don't carry a bag full of stuff. It is just me, the camera, and one lens. On a location shoot I sometimes have just a couple of hours. This particular image was the result of renting the home for a whole day which is not normal for me.

Feedback

My advice to someone is work with a camera and lens that you are very comfortable with. Be prepared to scout your location beforehand and have an idea of what you are going to do while there. On location shoots are always the most fun for me as the light is constantly evolving and you have to go with the flow. Sometime it all works well and other times you have to go back and do it again to get it right. Always remember the person you are working with my also have some excellent ideas and can make things even better. Collaborating is terrific.
