Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Maui, HI. We were out in my brother-in-law's boat heading to Molokini when this beauty started breaching! I was lucky that I brought my camera along!

Time

This was shot Sunday, ?March ?13, ?2011, ??12:45 AM

Lighting

Under the beautiful sunny sky around mid day!

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 40D and Canon 70-200 f2.8 at 200mm 1/2000s in a speeding boat over the ocean waves.

Inspiration

I had long wanted to photograph the whales breaching. We just happened to be in Maui on vacation at the right time! When I found out we were going out on the boat, I packed the longest lens I owned and took it with me "just in case". So glad I did!

Editing

This shot required minimal post processing. I did basic adjustments lifting the shadows.

In my camera bag

Back in 2011, I carried my Canon 40D, the 70-200 f2.8, the kit lens and the 10-22. If I got to do it again... My 80D, Sigma 150-600 or my Canon 100-400. My bag is much heavier now with the additional lenses!

Feedback

Go to Maui December-April. Roughly 10,000 humpback whales migrate there annually. There are many tours that can take you out whale watching!!
