Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photo from a pedestrian bridge going over the interstate heading into downtown Minneapolis.

Time

This is part of my "4 a.m. series" where I've been exploring the Twin Cities during the 4 a.m. hour. It's an odd hour that falls somewhere between being "too early" and "too late" - the morning joggers aren't out yet, but the late night party animals are generally back home. I feel like I have the city to myself.

Lighting

All natural (well, man-made) lighting.

Equipment

Canon 5D with a 25-135 mm lens and a Bogen tripod.

Inspiration

I loved the opening in the chain link fence, and downtown could be perfectly viewed from it.

Editing

I did just basic RAW corrections: lightened some darker values and darkened some highlights.

In my camera bag

Nothing fancy. I am a college professor, and I teach my students the rule I shoot by: the best camera is the one you have with you. I'm shooting with a 15-year-old 5D with just 2 lens (one wider and one more of a zoom). I have a tripod and a few batteries (especially when out in the cold where batteries die quickly).

Feedback

Keep your eyes open. I tend to head out to make photos and have a location or 2 in mind to shoot. So it's easy to miss other shots waiting for you if you're too determined to make a specific photo you have in your mind. Explore. Be open to what the world shows you.
