Behind The Lens

Location

The photo has been taken in Vila Nova de Gaia, a Portuguese city on the left bank of Douro river, in front of Porto.

Time

It has been the end of the day, about 6pm because it is the most beautiful time for portrait photo shooting in Porto, especially on the left side of the river. You can catch the warm light of the sun which is going down.

Lighting

If you need a natural picture you need natural light. Try to see not only the object you are framing but also, and more importantly, try to see the light. How it flows, how it lights the subject, where it goes from, what the color of it and so on. It is rarely you can save the image relying on the object while the light is awful. But vice versa - quite possible.

Equipment

Nikon D700 + 35mm f/4

Inspiration

I am a portrait photographer based in a popular tourist destination city. I am fond of taking pictures of people. It is like a lucky combination. And there was a no-fee collaboration with Instagram influencer. Moreover, she is very pretty.

Editing

Of course, I did some post-processing. I made some Adobe Lightroom base corrections and applied a film-like preset.

In my camera bag

For now, I have Nikon D750. About the lenses, it depends on the kind of photo shooting. If I do a portrait photoshoot I use then normally I am carrying 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4. If I do landscape/nature/city photography I take 17-35mm, 50mm, and 135mm.

Feedback

It is quite easy. What I said about the light and talk with people, try to make them relaxed and more natural.
