Location
This photo was taken one late afternoon in September. I had the awesome opportunity to go on a mission trip to do some work at a church in Juneau, Alaska. The pastor of the church was a bi-vocational pastor, which meant besides pastoring the church, he also owned a boat rental company. One afternoon he offered to take our team on one of his boats in order to see the beautiful view from the water and to look for humpback whale. We left out of Auke Bay right outside of downtown Juneau and traveled into what is called Favorite Channel. We saw two beautiful humpback whale right in front of Eagle Glacier. The perfect location for a photo! With the setting sun, the whale and the beautiful glacier, it couldn't have been any more majestic. The word majestic just kept coming to mind.Time
It is daylight longer in this area of Alaska than some areas. During September in Juneau, the sun doesn't set as early, which allowed us time to go out after a day of work and still have enough time to explore the beauty of the area. An absolutely perfect time of day for photos.Lighting
I couldn't be too picky about my lighting because I was at the mercy of our gracious boat captain. He had figured out that I love to take photos, so I think he knew that this would be a perfect time to get some great ones. It was like the Lord set this moment up just for me. What a majestic moment!Equipment
Because I knew we would be working most of the time that we were in Juneau, I didn't carry a lot of camera equipment with me. I did take my Nikon D5600 and my Sigma 18-35mm lens. I think this combo worked quite well for this spur-of-the-moment capture.Inspiration
I am inspired by everything in this world. In my opinion, there is not a bad moment. Inspiration is all around us, all we have to do is open our eyes. The camera helps me to find things that I might not otherwise have seen. It really helps me to pay attention and find something special in anything.Editing
I didn't have to do a lot of post-processing to this photo since perfection was mostly already there. The perfection had nothing to do with me, my camera settings, timing, or lighting; it just happened. I did use Lightroom to enhance the lighting and contrasts. In my camera bag
My Sigma 18-35mm lens is almost always my go-to piece of equipment. It just seems to be my friend, if that makes sense. I use other lenses, but this one is almost always with me or on my camera. It is like we just get each other.Feedback
My advice for anyone trying to capture something like this would be to always have a camera with you. There are moments like these in every place you go. You just have to pay attention and have your camera around your neck waiting to be your assistant as you seize the moment! Stop being a perfectionist and enjoy each and every moment as though it is always an adventure.
